What is genetic inheritance?

Modified on Mon, 10 Mar at 9:15 AM

Our pets inherit their DNA from their parents. If all the DNA from the parents was copied and passed on the offspring would end up with four DNA strands when it needs only two. When reproduction occurs the double DNA strand splits and one of mum's strands and one of dad's strands is copied and recombined to produce a new double DNA strand. Which strand from mum or dad is passed on is a straight 50/50 chance, like tossing a coin. This is inheritance and means that any mutations in the genetic code of mum or dad could be passed on to their offspring. This is why it is so important to genetically test any animals that you wish to breed from in order to make the most informed choice you can.
